Although the Public Defender is not a popular job, it is necessary.
Defending people accused of a crime does not make you popular, but is an essential part of our legal system. We must defend the rights of the accused from a homeless person in Daytona Beach to the President of the United States. Everyone's constitutional rights must be protected.
If we allow the government to trample on our rights, then we ALL lose our rights. The job of the Public Defender is to defend the public from the over reach of the government.
Our Public Defender must do more than just oversee the office and its attorneys. The new Public Defender must be fiscally responsible, live within a budget and help give the people a government they can afford.
The office has employees that serve all four counties of the 7th Judicial Circuit and has a budget of millions of your tax dollars. We need a leader in charge, not a government bureaucrat, career politician, or just someone looking for a pay raise. We deserve someone whose public service includes a lot more than just previous government jobs.
The 7th Judicial Circuit is made up of Volusia, St. Johns, Flagler and Putnam Counties. The voters of these counties will decide who is the next Public Defender.
